Dawn of the Yogi
Want to do yoga AND kill zombies at the same time? Now you can! At least virtually anyway. Play Zombie Yoga, an Xbox Kinect (Kinect monitors your movements and uses a virtual avatar to mimic you on a computer/TV screen) video game, and you’ll be Garudasana-ing/slaying zombies faster than you can say Rick Grimes.
To Be or Not to Be
It seems as if the debate over yoga as a religion and
whether is should be taught in schools is catching fire again.
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court of India began debating over the issue of schools being allowed to teach yoga during students’ physical education classes. Because some view yoga to be a religion, the practice could be seen as not in line with public school policies, which do not permit religious influences. Seeing as India is the origin country of yoga, it will be interesting to see how this case unfolds.
And in New Mexico, a similar debate is occurring. State Representative Alonzo Baldonado (R) has gone up against teacher Ann Paulls-Neal who has been practicing yoga with her students. “I think it tends to open a door to a practice tied to a religious belief,” Baldonado said. “ “There is a good population of people out there who feel that way, so we have to ask if another option is available for them.” Baldonado is a father to three homeschooled daughters and has opted them out of yoga practices that are held as part of their swim team routine.
Whether you think yoga is part of religion or not, it seems this debate isn’t going away anytime soon.
The High Cost a Being
a Fashionable Yogi
Even though our economy remains sluggish, high-end
yoga companies like Lululemon and Athleta are still finding their market. While
Lululemon remains the more sought after and more expensive brand, Athleta is
making waves thanks to solid reviews and a fair return policy. And with new
yoga brands popping up left and right these days, the horseshoe logoed brand
should probably reevaluate its standards.
What’s it good for:
COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and Lung
Function
New
research out of India is suggesting that “lung function, shortness of breath, and inflammation all showed
significant improvement after patients completed 12 weeks” of practicing yoga.
Seeing as how inhalers are more expensive than ever, perhaps it’s time to invest in some yoga
classes instead.
